SMTP & Email Client Issues

We have just completed a server migration that has been in the works for the last year. Whilst we have tried to keep our members up to date with the changes we note that some remain unclear on how the new servers require authentication.

Please find below the most up to date instructions for connecting your email client for both inbound and outbound email.

INCOMING EMAIL (IMAP or POP)

IMAP (Recommended)

Server:  mail.secure.aluminati.net (Port:  993)
Username:  <FULL EMAIL ADDRESS> (N.B. It is not sufficient to use only the username bit before the @-sign)
Security: STARTTLS (or SSL/TLS if available)
Authentication:  Password (or select "My server requires authentication" if Outlook)

POP (Not Recommended)

Server: mail.secure.aluminati.net (Port: 110)
Username: <FULL EMAIL ADDRESS> (N.B. It is not sufficient to use only the username bit before the @-sign)
Security: STARTTLS
Authentication:  Password (or select "My server requires authentication" if Outlook)

OUTGOING EMAIL (SMTP)

Server: mail.secure.aluminati.net (Port: 587, if that fails try 465)
Username: <FULL EMAIL ADDRESS> (N.B. It is not sufficient to use only the username bit before the @-sign)
Security: STARTTLS
Authentication:  Password (or select "My server requires authentication" if Outlook)

If needed, you can use a page that we created in May to remind yourself of your primary email.

Most Common Problems

  1. Many people fail to use their full email address as the username. If your email is jane.smith@email.com then you have to enter this full email address. "jane.smith" is NOT sufficient to connect to the server.
  2. Double check your mail server name is correct. We recommend using the secure server mail.secure.aluminati.net.
  3. Make sure your ports are correct. For SMTP, if 587 does not work then try 465
  4. Certain devices such as iPhones are a bit buggy at applying changed settings. In the first instance you may try restarting the device. If that doesn't work we would recommend removing your email account entirely and re-entering the account with the above correct settings.
  5. If you are using Outlook then please ensure that your “Outgoing Server” settings specifies your email address and password (rather than selecting “Use same settings as my incoming mail server”):

If you are still encountering issues with your mail client after making the changes above then please contact help@aluminati.net and we will investigate further. Any information about specific error messages will always be helpful.

Re-connecting

Concordia Alumni Connect is a great place to reconnect with fellow alumni, gain industry knowledge and share career expertise and opportunities with each other and the next generation of Concordia Alumni.

Professional Network

Trying to get back in touch with old classmates? Or to find alumni in your area or field of work? Find the connections you need to further your career or business.

Concordia Map

This map helps you see where in the country, or indeed the world, other Concordia alumni are based.

This could be useful if you are visiting an area for a holiday, on business, or completely relocating to a new place and keen to connect with others who share your experiences of Concordia!

eMentoring Platform

The eMentoring platform is designed to help alumni and graduating students connect so that alumni can advise and give guidance to Concordia alumni embarking on their chosen careers. This could be anything from a few emails or checking a CV/application, to meeting face to face or even offering work experience.

The idea is that alumni can donate as much or as little of their time as they can spare to helping those in need of a helping hand at the beginning of their careers.
